How to Use AliveDate in Your Classroom
- 1.Have students calculate their own Alive Date using the calculator tool.
- 2.Explore the interactive timeline together, discussing each milestone and what was developing at that stage.
- 3.Use the system filter (Heart, Brain, Movement, Senses) to focus on specific body systems and their development.
- 4.Switch between Junior Explorer and Advanced Scholar modes using the track toggle to match your students' grade level.
- 5.Challenge students with the milestone quiz to test their knowledge of prenatal development.
- 6.Visit the What is DNA?, The Growing Room, and Science Gallery pages for deeper content.
Lesson Plans by Grade Level
Grades 4–5: “The Seed That Became You”
Objective: Understand that human life begins at fertilization and grows through stages.
Activities: Growth Garden slider, size comparison with real length & weight measurements, “What's Happening Now?” quiz.
NGSS Alignment: 4-LS1-1 (internal/external structures support survival, growth, behavior).
Grades 5–6: “Your DNA Instruction Book”
Objective: Explore DNA as the blueprint established at conception containing all instructions for growth.
Activities: DNA page exploration, timeline from fertilization to Week 8, paired discussion on uniqueness.
NGSS Alignment: 5-LS2-1 (movement of matter among organisms).
Grades 6–8: “Body Systems from Day 1”
Objective: Trace the development of major body systems (circulatory, nervous, respiratory) from embryonic stages.
Activities: System filter on timeline, Science Gallery body system cards, compare junior vs. scholar descriptions.
NGSS Alignment: MS-LS1-3 (body is a system of interacting subsystems).
Grades 9–12: “The Science of ‘Alive’”
Objective: Analyze biological markers of life (metabolism, growth, response) from fertilization using Advanced Scholar content.
Activities: Advanced Scholar timeline with Carnegie Stages, EHD comparison, research-based essay on developmental markers.
NGSS Alignment: HS-LS1-2 (hierarchical organization from cells to organisms).
